Brewery Effluent Treatment with Conventional and Natural Coagulants

چکیده
In water scarce countries such as Eritrea, maintaining brewery industry remain ever challenging task. Currently, Asmara breweries is the only beer producing factory consuming 8.46 L of per every produced which notably higher than Brewer’s Association (BA) benchmark and consequently generates 7.53 wastewater/L beer. Bottle cleaning activities ascertain ample effluent bases. Wastewater from bottle (BCWW), (BWW) mixed (MWW) have attributed a wide spectrum 3500-160000 mg/L COD 327-26667 BOD5, are significantly overtops other reported effluents. Physicochemical treatments including coagulation with conventional (alum) natural (MO seed) flocculants tested to remove BOD5 concentrations Optimal coagulant dosage determined by accounting turbidity key performance indicator. Alum treatment BCWW MO seed flocculation MWW resulted in lower levels 0.49 6.17 NTU at 60 dosages respectively. The optimal quantities 92.2 % 86.6% (by weight) recovered alum Higher sludge volumes recorded major disadvantage whereas coagulant, manifested competitive results removal COD, Chlorine, Nitrogen, Sulphate, Sodium, TDS TSS along PH stabilization. addition, 97.2% influent removed through treatment, an equipollent despite four fold increment potassium levels.

Recent Developments in Biological Treatment of Brewery Effluent
During the last two decades the brewing industry has shown increasing awareness for environmental protection and the need of sustainable production processes. Implementation of ISO 14001 certification and more stringent environmental legislation have been important drivers for the brewing industry to invest in biological effluent treatment. The role of biological effluent treatment is discussed...
متن کاملUse of natural coagulants for industrial wastewater treatment
Industrial effluents are a menace to the environment and the fact that their characteristics vary from industry-to-industry only adds to the complex challenge they offer to the engineers and scientists. Resource-efficient and environment-friendly solutions to this hazard are a call of the hour. Coagulation, by synthetic chemicals, has been used as a cost-effective and efficient method for manag...
متن کاملEffect of Metal Salt Coagulants on Treatment of Activated Sludge Effluent in Sulfite Mill Pulp and Paper Plant
Pulp and paper effluents are considered as serious environmental hazards and their treatment, because of multiplicity of impurities and complexity of their chemical structures, is one of the most difficult and inconvenient industrial processes. As the most pulp and paper mill work on kraft process, there are few studies in literature on the treatment of neural sulfite semi chemical (NSSC) p...
متن کاملTreatment of Brewery Wastewater Effluent Using Activated Carbon Prepared from Coconut Shell
The use and effectiveness of granular and powder activated carbon made from agricultural waste (coconut shell) in the removal of organic matter in wastewater effluents from a brewery industry were investigated. The effect of process variables such as carbonisation temperature, carbonisation duration and activation temperature on the production and quality of activated carbon was studied. Experi...
متن کاملAdsorptive treatment of brewery effluent using activated Chrysophyllum albidium seed shell carbon
Chrysophyllum albidium seed shell, an abundant, biodegradable and inexpensive natural resource was used as a precursor to bioadsorbent production for the removal of suspended and dissolved particles (SDP) from initially coagulated Brewery Effluent (BRE). Influence of key parameters such as contact time, bioadsorbent dose, pH and temperature were investigated using batch mode. The thermal behavi...
